3 tonne fork lift truck

Product

MV250 - 3 tonne fork lift truck - N Gauge

Details

Comes in kit form and requires construction and painting.

Forklift trucks have developed trough the twentieth century into what we see today with IC engine powered trucks ranging in lift capacity from 1.5-tonne though to 50-tonne with some special builds exceeding this. Lift-heights are also important and can affect lift capacity considerably with hydraulics providing the services. They are often referred to as FLTís and being so successful it led to the industry expansion worldwide developing into some 30 or more manufacturers although now shrinking below twenty. They all produce similar looking models with varying lift heights and capacities with front drive-axles supporting the mast, carriage & forks and rear steer-axles carrying a large counterweight-balance. Surprisingly in general they spend more time parked up than in use and half their working life is un-laden hence can survive for years, unless overload abused . Safety has always been an issue being easy to overload and tip-over leading to fatalities. Overhead Loadguard arrived through the sixties and although most are of open structure for visibility they are often covered to help keep off the rain where used outside. Larger models (10-tonne upwards) usually have glazed cabs as standard. All looking very similar especially when painted yellow, manufacturers now paint them differently using their corporate colour, generally a single colour with a black mast to improve visibility through it and black or white cabs plus pre-printed vinyl logos and markings applied.

Our design criteria is to create scale size simulated FLT models, with it being possible to display the same model with mast tilted forward and back and extending upwards and with carriage & forks raised and lowered. We also consider it important to keep the assembly as simple as possible. They are not a direct copy on any specific make, just a soundly engineered representation to sit happily on any layout over this time-period, suiting N-gauge 1:148 to 1:160 scales. The aim is for each truck to counter balance and stand under its own weight with mast and carriage fully extended at maximum laden height, where this is physically possible. Seated operators are also provided but they need not be fitted if truck is to be shown parked. The cabs when fitted can also be glazed.

This 3-tonne equivalent model has a Loadguard with a covered top and although the Mast is not extendible it is cast fully extended allowing carriage and forks to be placed at the 12ft (scale size) lift height. The mast can be cut down if truck is to be shown parked with forks on the ground. Paint colours are to choice but if mast is left fully extended the top half of integral lift cylinder (up the side of mast) should be painted silver and the integral wheel & tyres on the chassis picked out in black.
